Pottery Date Night St. Louis

The pottery class we took was called “Clay Date Night Wheel Throwing 101” at the South Broadway Art Project and it was so much fun! It’s a pottery date night designed for pottery newbies so you don’t have to be an expert clay thrower to join in. Everyone works at their own speed after the teacher shows you the basics. And even though it’s called “Date Night” this would also be really fun with a friend, your mom, sister, or whoever.

Pottery Class Tips

  • What to wear to pottery class?

    • Pottery class is quite messy. Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting clay on. You can wear shorts but just understand that you may get water or clay on your legs too.

  • What is a good age to start pottery?

    • You can start making pottery at any age but to use a wheel and throw clay a person should have steady hands and a steady temper. It can be frustrating to learn at first.

    • I would say kids at least 6 years old would be best to start pottery. Obviously this varies widely from child to child depending on maturity and physical abilities.

  • Do I have to cut my nails for pottery?

    • You don’t have to cut your nails for pottery if they aren’t too long. If you have very long nails you risk gauging your pottery or getting a lot of clay stuck beneath them.

  • Should I wear a mask while doing pottery?

    • You should wear a mask while doing pottery if you are making clay with powder or mixing glazes. A proper dust mask is important while working with powders due to silica dust in pottery.

    • We had to wear masks during our pottery date night class only because it was during COVID. The clay was premade for us so there was no dust in the air.

Highly recommend trying out one of these pottery classes in St. Louis for your next date night in the city! Skip the same old dinner and a movie and create something together! Learning a new skill together is a great bonding experience for any couple, family, or friendship.
